Pints n' Pixels: Hooey!

ints n' Pixels has arrived!

*Let the blog peasants rejoice!*

Since this is the first episode or article or whatever you want to call it - I'm going to take a minute to lay out how this is going to go. Don't worry - it's pretty simple.

1. I pick a beer that I think has a cool label (preferably one that I haven't had before)

2. I research or visit the brewery

3. I critique the can design and review the beer/brewery brand design

4. And finally, I write this blog ... while drinking the beer. 😀

*Step 4 is important to understand as it might explain why my spelling gets worse or I start to not make sense as the blog goes on.

It's currently a Sunday and I am sitting on my couch after a long week of work. This is usually a somber Sunday because it's the first Sunday without any football on. The house is quiet with only a faint whisper of F-bombs and "use your d*amn legs, Cousins!". But all is right in the world because I have a Hooey in my hand.

Let me lay it out for you. This puppy comes in at a beautiful 6.2% ABV. Wrapping its arms around you, the Hooey hazy IPA has a juicy yet classic IPA flavor to it which I highly recommend for those first time IPA drinkers. It comes in a pint which is perfect for any size human. The distinct flavor comes from intentionally leaving the yeast and hop oils in the beer by not filtering them out.

Overall it's an easy drinker but still packs the punch and taste of an IPA.

Now let's talk about that gorgeously psychedelic label.

I selected this beer as my first Pints n' Pixels beer review simply because of the label. If you have ever been to a liquor store, aisles lined with bottles and cans, you know that labels are everything. This one simply jumped off the shelf. The simple integration of their hop logo mixed in with delicate line work is pretty neat -- by the third or fourth can you can even begin to see those little worms and balls wiggle!

The nutrition and brew information on the back is done in the same color treatment which just ties everything together so beautifully. The addition of which glass to properly drink it in is a nice touch if your super serious about drinking your beer right. Call me crazy but I like to appreciate the can while I enjoy my beer - or a frosted mug will do. Either way, this beer is a solid winner and scored a 4.5/5 on my untapped check-in.

Alright, now that I got my second can of Hooey opened and ready to enjoy, the Lupulin Brewing label along with the overall brand design is the next thing on the list to review.

The logo is simple and solid. I'm glad that they didn't fall for that typical start-up brewery logo with the "x" dividing icon elements or letters. Their blocked letters are treated in a nice Sans-Serif font while their colors are a nice black and yellow. I do think that they get away with using such a harsh black label here. It's usually not recommended to do that but maybe they needed to since it's gotta stand out on those fancy colorful cans.

So since I didn't get the pleasure to visit their brewery I decided to review their website. You can check it out here. By the way, they are located in Sioux Falls SD and Big Lake MN.

Overall the website is pretty good. It does its job of giving you the information you want without having to dig really hard to find it. You can tell right away from opening it that its focus is on events - makes sense. But there are a couple of things that this brewery website does really well and one thing it could change.

Let's talk about what is going right:

The beer "gallery" is doing everything right. The gallery is made up of cards that tell you a bit about the beer and an RSS feed that links the beer to the Untapped audience so that you can hear what people are saying about each beer - I always love it when breweries do this.

They also prominently display their can design which pretty much all of them are unique and interesting to look at. Hooey is probably my favorite can design they have but this one below is a close second.

Now let's talk about what could be done better:

Besides their inconsistent type treatment, there really is only one thing that maybe could be done better. Their can designs have such a cool style to them and for the most part, are consistent. I just think that they missed an opportunity to tie that line work more into their brand and website design. They have it a bit in their backgrounds and footers - so they did try. I just think it would be cool to see what a website version of the Hooey can would look like!

In the end, their beer is great and my Sunday is now made even better!
